Millions of Americans just like you suffer with poor oral health because of their lack of attention to important oral care routines. Without a doubt, a regular dental visit would help them improve their oral health. Unfortunately, many people today suffer from severe dental anxiety and believe that their visit to the dentist will be painful.
The real problem is a lack of information and experience regarding a regular dental visit. Just because you go to the dentist, doesn’t mean that your teeth will be drilled. Hopefully this article will be able to put your worries to rest and provide you with good information regarding routine dental visits.
There are essentially two types of dental visits; one type would be a regular checkup, or examination; another type would be a routine cleaning.
At a regular visit that does not involve a cleaning, your dentist will check for plaque and tartar on your teeth as well as any other oral issues that you may have. Your gums will also be checked. This is done with a special tool that measures the spaces between your gaps and gums, often called pockets. Through these checks your dentist will be able to see if you are at risk for developing gum disease, cavities, oral cancer, and any other signs of trouble.
Dental examinations are often accompanied by dental cleanings. During this routine cleaning, your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned. Your dentist can scrape off built up dental plaque using a special tool that can remove hardened plaque that a toothbrush cannot. Your teeth may also be polished. You could receive a fluoride treatment as well.
A visit to your dentist at least every 6 months can dramatically reduce your risk of oral cancer. It can also help you completely avoid serious dental problems such as those that require a root canal.
